Prevent and British Values at Educationwise

At Educationwise we are committed to creating a learning environment where every person feels safe, respected and able to engage openly. That commitment extends beyond safeguarding in the traditional sense. It includes our responsibilities under the Prevent Duty and our commitment to promoting the British Values that underpin respectful, inclusive and fair communities.

Prevent is part of the UK government’s approach to safeguarding and is designed to protect people from the risk of radicalisation and harmful extremist influences. It is not about restricting debate or telling people what to think. It is about helping learners think critically, stay safe online and recognise when something or someone may be trying to manipulate or harm them.

Anyone can be vulnerable to harmful influences at different times in their lives, particularly during periods of stress, isolation or significant change. Recognising that vulnerability and knowing how to respond to it is something we take seriously across all of our programmes.

British Values at Educationwise

British Values are not a political statement and they are not about telling people what to believe. They are a set of shared principles that help communities function fairly, learning environments feel safe and workplaces treat people with the dignity they deserve. At Educationwise, they shape how we deliver our programmes, how we expect people to be treated within them and how we think about our responsibilities to every learner we work with.

Creating a Positive Learning Community

Every person who learns or works within Educationwise contributes to the culture of that environment. By approaching your learning with respect, keeping an open mind and supporting the people around you, you help create a community where everyone feels safe, valued and able to succeed. That is not just something we ask of our learners. It is something we commit to ourselves.

How Prevent Shows Up in Everyday Life

For most people, Prevent will never involve anything dramatic or obvious. It is much more likely to appear in small moments, a piece of content that feels designed to divide, a community that feels difficult to question, a pressure to think or behave in a certain way. Being equipped to recognise those moments is what this section is about.

Harmful influence does not always announce itself. It can look like pressure to cut off from friends or family, exposure to online communities that encourage hatred or violence, misinformation or conspiracy content designed to provoke fear or division, or simply feeling pressured to adopt views that feel wrong but are difficult to challenge alone. If something feels off, it probably is.

Living the principles of Prevent does not require anything dramatic. It looks like being respectful during disagreements, questioning information before sharing it, thinking critically about what you read or watch online and being willing to listen to perspectives that differ from your own. These are habits that protect individuals and the communities around them.

The online world is where a significant amount of harmful influence now begins, which is why digital awareness is a central part of how we approach Prevent at Educationwise. Some simple habits make a real difference: always check information against trusted sources before accepting or sharing it, be cautious of anonymous groups or forums that promote strong emotional reactions, avoid sharing personal details with people or communities you do not know and speak to someone you trust if something you encounter online makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Talking About Concerns

You will never get into trouble for asking questions or raising concerns. If something you have seen, heard or experienced, whether online, in person or within a community, makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please speak to someone. You can contact your tutor directly, reach our safeguarding team via our safeguarding page or speak to any trusted adult or support service. We would always rather hear a concern that turns out to be nothing than not hear one that needed attention.
If you are worried about someone else rather than yourself, please still reach out. Early conversations make a real difference.
