How Damien Overcame Anxiety and Excelled in Functional Skills English

Returning to education can feel daunting, especially when life is busy and confidence is low. Damien experienced this firsthand when he started his Level 2 Functional Skills English course alongside his Level 2 Playworker Apprenticeship with Educationwise. At first, he was anxious and unsure how he would manage studying again. “I’ve never really considered myself academic, but I was determined to add English to my portfolio,” he recalls.

From the very beginning, Damien benefited from the personalised support that Educationwise is known for. His tutors provided structure, reassurance, and guidance at every step. “Naomi has been the best English teacher I could have hoped for. The course was presented clearly, and I soon started working beyond my own expectations,” Damien explains. This level of support transformed what felt like a challenge into an empowering learning experience.

Balancing work, family life, and study can be difficult, but Educationwise’s flexible approach made it possible. Working two jobs and caring for his children, Damien was able to stay on track through structured two-week cycles, regular Teams catch-ups, and detailed feedback. He also found the online Pass Functional Skills platform intuitive and helpful in preparing for his exams.

The journey was not just about exams, it was about gaining confidence, practical skills, and real-world knowledge. Damien particularly enjoyed the presentation and discussion assessments, which allowed him to practice communication skills and apply learning in a meaningful way. “Passing that assessment felt especially rewarding and boosted my confidence,” he says.

By the time Damien approached his final reading and writing exams, he felt fully prepared. “During the exam, I felt calm knowing that Naomi and the Educationwise team had supported me every step of the way. The experience felt positive rather than stressful,” he explains.

Successfully achieving his Functional Skills English Level 2 qualification marked a significant milestone in Damien’s apprenticeship journey. “I am over the moon to have passed and finally have a certificate to show for my efforts,” he says. His story highlights the impact of supportive, flexible, and practical learning, exactly what Educationwise offers for apprentices across a variety of sectors.

For learners considering returning to education or progressing in their apprenticeship, Damien’s message is clear: the right guidance and flexible learning options make all the difference. “Thank you to Naomi and the whole team at Educationwise for everything you do. I would highly recommend Educationwise to anyone looking to develop skills, confidence, and career-ready knowledge.”

Damien’s journey exemplifies why Educationwise continues to be a trusted partner for learners and employers alike, providing Functional Skills English courses and apprenticeships that build confidence, practical expertise, and long-term career success.
