Building Confidence and Career Skills
with Functional Skills

Happy male learner representing confidence and success with Functional Skills Level 2

Learning doesn’t stop at school, and developing essential skills like English can make a huge difference in both your personal and professional life. Joe, one of our recent learners, enrolled on Educationwise’s English Functional Skills Level 2 course to improve his written and communication skills, aiming to gain confidence in academic and workplace settings. His experience shows how accessible learning, supportive tutors, and a flexible online platform can transform confidence and capability.

Before starting the course, Joe felt much more comfortable with verbal communication than with writing. He wanted to strengthen his ability to express ideas effectively on paper, knowing that improved writing skills would help him in both classroom and professional environments. “It was best suited for me as I struggle more with written work but can easily communicate to solve problems and questions,” Joe explained.

Educationwise provided an intuitive online learning platform, designed to make studying straightforward and engaging. Alongside this, Joe benefited from the guidance of knowledgeable and approachable tutors who offered practical support whenever needed. “Educationwise supported me with their platforms that were easy to use and offered tutors who were very helpful and supportive,” he said. This combination of tools and support allowed Joe to engage with the course content at his own pace while building essential literacy skills.

The impact of completing the English Functional Skills Level 2 qualification has been significant. Joe reports increased confidence in contributing to professional discussions, completing written tasks accurately, and supporting others with literacy-based activities. “With my new knowledge I can support the teacher further and help the kids more,” he said. Alongside practical skills, he gained a stronger understanding of grammar, vocabulary, and communication techniques, which helped him feel more confident when speaking and responding in educational settings. “My new skills have helped with my confidence when delivering in class sessions, because I am sure of my answers when the kids ask a question.”

For Joe, the course has not only improved his practical English skills but also his overall confidence, opening up opportunities for further learning and career progression. “I would recommend it. It’s an easy way to gain confidence and gain more knowledge that could help you further down the line,” he reflected.

At Educationwise, Functional Skills courses are an important part of our apprenticeship programmes, allowing learners to develop essential English and maths skills alongside hands-on workplace experience. This integration ensures that apprentices gain both practical industry knowledge and the foundational skills needed to succeed in their roles and progress in their careers.

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your English for work, study, or personal growth, or want to combine it with an apprenticeship programme, Joe’s story shows that the right guidance and support can make all the difference.
