Through our partnership with EFL in the Community, Educationwise provides apprenticeship training to clubs across the EFL network, helping staff at every level develop new skills and take the next step in their careers. These programmes play a vital role in supporting lifelong learning, professional growth and the wider community impact that football clubs can deliver beyond the pitch.
One powerful example is Chris Lloyd.
At Barnsley FC Community Trust, learning doesn’t stop on the football pitch. For Chris, a UEFA B coach, the journey from community coaching to leading education programmes has been nothing short of transformative.
Chris began his career working with children as young as four through to under-18s in grassroots football. “Before taking a step towards education and teaching I was a UEFA B coach,” he explains. “I worked with a wide range of age groups developing not just football skills but also life skills and confidence within the community setting.”
Now Chris has transitioned into a leadership role in education. As a post-16 and degree programme lead he’s currently undertaking the Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher apprenticeship with Educationwise, using the qualification to upskill and better support his learners.
“This apprenticeship has really helped me understand the needs of my students” he says. “It’s equipped me with the skills and knowledge to give them the best possible chance to grow and develop. I’m looking forward to completing the course and pushing myself even further to see where my education career can take me.”
His tutor Kate Richardson couldn’t be more pleased with his progress.
“Chris has been a great learner from the start, he consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to both his personal and professional development. He attends every session, engages fully in learning activities and brings a genuine enthusiasm to his work. His assignments are always well presented and reflect a high standard of thinking and understanding. He approaches the apprenticeship with responsibility and a positive mindset.”
Chris’s story is a powerful example of how professional development can open new doors not just for the learner but for the community they support. As he continues to evolve in his new career there’s no doubt that his impact will reach far beyond the classroom.
