The Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship is designed for individuals who want to play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across a range of educational settings. Teaching Assistants work closely with teachers to enhance pupils’ understanding of lesson content, support behaviour management and help all learners achieve their full potential.
They work in primary, secondary and special schools supporting pupils of all ages, including those with special educational needs or emotional vulnerabilities. Teaching Assistants contribute to planning, classroom delivery and pupil support, fostering an inclusive and encouraging learning environment.
Apprentices will develop the skills to promote pupils’ confidence, self-esteem and social inclusion. They also act as positive role models and contribute to school life through team meetings and classroom activities.
For a full list of the knowledge, skills and behaviours covered, please visit the Institute for Apprenticeships website.
Over a 12 to 15-month programme, apprentices gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to succeed as a Teaching Assistant. Learning is delivered through weekly online sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, supported by a dedicated tutor who provides individual guidance throughout.
Learners also have access to a range of online support materials to assist with off-the-job training. The programme combines theory and practical learning through classroom sessions, mentoring and real-world experience in an educational setting.
At least 20 per cent of the apprenticeship must be completed as off-the-job training. These hours must be logged and evidenced with clear guidance given during enrolment.
Once learners have completed their training and reached Gateway they move on to the End-Point Assessment which takes place over a three-month period. This includes a practical observation with questions, a professional discussion and a portfolio of evidence. Learners who successfully complete the programme will achieve the Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship standard, a nationally recognised qualification that can lead to further roles in education or progression to higher-level teaching and support roles.
