Course Summary

The Level 2 Playworker apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are passionate about supporting children and young people through play. Playworkers create inclusive and engaging environments that allow children to explore, learn and grow through free and self-directed play.

Working in settings such as schools, adventure playgrounds, hospitals and community centres, Playworkers tailor their approach to the needs and interests of each child. They promote creativity, social interaction and physical activity while ensuring that play spaces are safe, supportive and stimulating.

This role requires a strong understanding of child development, play theory and safeguarding. Playworkers work closely with families, educators and other professionals to advocate for the child’s right to play and ensure it is embedded into wider educational and care plans.

Learner Journey

Over a 14-month programme, apprentices will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to support children’s play professionally. The course includes weekly online learning sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, guided by a dedicated tutor who provides one-to-one support throughout.

Learners also have access to a wide range of digital resources to support their off-the-job training. The programme includes classroom sessions, mentoring, off-site visits and applied learning in real playwork environments.

At least 20 per cent of the apprenticeship must be completed as off-the-job training. These hours must be logged and evidenced with clear guidance provided at enrolment.

Assessment & Certification

Once learners have completed their training and reached Gateway they move on to the End-Point Assessment which takes place over a three-month period. This includes a multiple-choice test, a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and an observation with questions. Learners who successfully complete the programme will achieve the Level 2 Playworker apprenticeship standard, a nationally recognised qualification that supports progression within education, childcare or youth work settings.
