The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship is designed for individuals working in education who support pupils with more complex or specialised needs. Specialist Teaching Assistants collaborate closely with teachers to deliver personalised support and help pupils overcome learning barriers while contributing to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
They may work in primary, secondary or special schools, providing targeted assistance across three key areas: SEND support, social and emotional well-being and curriculum provision. Whether adapting learning materials, delivering interventions or helping pupils develop coping strategies, Specialist Teaching Assistants play a central role in supporting academic progress and personal development.
This advanced role requires strong communication, resilience and a deep understanding of child development, behaviour and inclusion strategies.

Over a 24-month programme, apprentices will develop the advanced knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to support learners with complex or additional needs. The course includes weekly online learning sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, supported by a dedicated tutor who provides individual guidance throughout.
Learners will also gain access to a full suite of online learning resources to support their weekly off-the-job training. The programme combines theory and applied experience through classroom sessions, mentoring and hands-on support within the learner’s school or educational setting.
At least 20 per cent of the apprenticeship must be completed as off-the-job training. These hours must be logged and evidenced with clear expectations set during enrolment.
Once learners have completed their training and reached Gateway they move on to the End-Point Assessment which takes place over a three-month period. This includes a practical observation, a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence and further professional discussions to assess overall competence. Learners who successfully complete the programme will achieve the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant apprenticeship standard, a nationally recognised qualification that supports career progression in education and pupil support services.
