Course Summary

The Level 3 Community Sport and Health Officer (CSHO) apprenticeship is designed for individuals who are passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of others through sport and physical activity. CSHOs play a vital role in engaging communities, breaking down barriers to participation and promoting long-term behaviour change.

Working with organisations such as sports clubs, youth services and public health bodies, they design and lead inclusive programmes that help people lead more active lives. The role also involves managing volunteers, supporting local partnerships and evaluating the impact of activities delivered.

This is a flexible, community-based role that often includes evening and weekend work to reach a diverse range of participants. CSHOs also collaborate with professionals from sectors such as healthcare, education and law enforcement to provide holistic support that addresses the wider needs of the community.

Learner Journey

Over a 14-month programme, apprentices develop the practical skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to become effective Community Sport and Health Officers. The course is delivered through weekly online sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, with each learner supported by a dedicated tutor throughout their journey.

Learners will also gain access to a wide range of online learning and support resources to help them stay on track and complete their off-the-job training. The programme combines theory with hands-on experience through classroom sessions, mentoring and real-world activities within the community.

At least 20 per cent of the apprenticeship must be completed as off-the-job training. These hours must be logged and evidenced, with clear guidance given at the point of enrolment.

Assessment & Certification

Once learners have completed their training and reached Gateway, they move on to the End-Point Assessment, which takes place over a three-month period. This includes a panel interview, a presentation with questions and answers, work-based observations and a case study challenge.
