Personal Trainer

Level 3

12 Month Programme

A Personal Trainer is a fitness professional who works with clients individually or in small groups to help them achieve their health and fitness objectives. They create personalised exercise programmes, offer nutritional guidance, and provide overall lifestyle advice to motivate clients towards positive behavioural changes and improved well-being. Personal Trainers must recognise the boundaries of their expertise, referring clients to appropriate professionals, such as physiotherapists or dietitians, when specialised information is required.

In addition to fitness coaching, Personal Trainers need a solid understanding of business operations, including finance, sales, and marketing, to build and maintain a stable client base. They may be employed by fitness or leisure centres or choose to operate independently. The role often requires working flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, to accommodate clients’ schedules.

This profession plays a significant role in enhancing public health by encouraging more people to engage in regular physical activity, thereby contributing to the nation’s overall well-being.

For a detailed breakdown of the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to achieve this qualification, please visit the Institute for Apprenticeships website.

Over a 12-month programme, learners develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for the End-Point Assessment. This journey is supported by a blend of weekly online sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, guided by a dedicated tutor. Learners will have access to online learning and support materials to assist with their weekly off-the-job training.

The programme includes classroom sessions, mentoring, off-site visits, and a structured 20% off-the-job training requirement. Learners must log evidence of learning activities that take place outside their regular work environment but contribute to their apprenticeship. The required training hours will be confirmed during enrolment.

At the Gateway stage, progress is reviewed to ensure readiness for the on-programme assessment. The End-Point Assessment takes place over a three-month period, during which learners will complete a one-hour presentation, submit a portfolio of evidence, and take part in a one-hour professional discussion to demonstrate their proficiency.
