Course Summary

The Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship is designed for individuals looking to advance their coaching career across a range of professional settings. Sports coaches support individuals and teams by delivering structured, high-quality coaching programmes that enhance performance, participation and personal development.

Coaches apply in-depth technical and tactical knowledge to design sessions that build skills, confidence and resilience. They work with a wide range of participants, from young people in schools to elite athletes at national and international level. Depending on their setting, they may focus on performance development, community participation or education-based coaching.

Sports coaches play a key role in improving physical and mental wellbeing, supporting social change and helping individuals reach their potential. Their work involves collaboration with other professionals including sport scientists, teachers, analysts and community leaders to deliver coaching that meets strategic and individual goals.

Learner Journey

Over a 15-month programme, apprentices will develop the advanced coaching knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to succeed in a professional sports coaching role. The course is delivered through weekly online sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, with one-to-one support from a dedicated tutor throughout.

Learners also have access to a wide range of online learning resources to support their progress and meet off-the-job training requirements. The programme combines theory and practice through classroom sessions, mentoring and applied learning experiences in real coaching environments.

At least 20 per cent of the apprenticeship must be completed as off-the-job training. These hours must be logged and evidenced, with full guidance provided at the point of enrolment.

Assessment & Certification

Once learners have completed their training and reached Gateway, they move on to the End-Point Assessment, which takes place over a three-month period. This includes a one-hour presentation, a portfolio of evidence and a one-hour professional discussion. Learners who successfully complete the programme will achieve the Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship standard, a nationally recognised qualification that can lead to further development in high-performance coaching, school-based roles or community sport leadership.
