Qualifications:
LEVEL 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant
LEVEL 2 in Maths & English (This requirement only applies if the learner does not already hold these qualifications.)
COURSE SUMMARY
Summary:
Specialist teaching assistants work in various educational settings, including schools, colleges, and alternative provision, supporting learners of all ages. They focus on advancing learning in areas such as special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), social and emotional well-being, or curriculum specialisms like early reading, maths, or music.
Their role involves planning and adapting activities, supporting inclusion, and working with learners, families, teachers, and external agencies. They contribute to assessments, reflect on their practice, and support colleagues’ development. Under a teacher’s supervision, they ensure learners’ safety and progress while championing inclusion and achievement.
Specialist teaching assistants can specialise in one of three areas. These specialisms enable them to tailor their support to meet the needs of learners effectively:
S.E.N.D:
Supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities by implementing SEND policies and processes.
Social & Emotional Well-being:
Focusing on learners’ emotional development and well-being to advance their learning.
Curriculum Provision:
Providing specialist support in areas like early reading, maths, specific subjects, forest schools, or English as an additional language (EAL).
How You Will Learn:
A blend of weekly online sessions and quarterly face-to-face visits, guided by a dedicated tutor. You’ll have access to online learning and support materials to assist with your weekly off-the-job training.
Learner Journey:
Over an 24-month programme, you’ll develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours necessary for the End Point Assessment (EPA). This journey includes classroom sessions, mentoring, off-site visits, and 20% off-the-job training.
At the Gateway stage, your progress is reviewed in preparation for the EPA, which assesses your proficiency through observation with questioning and a professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.
End-Point Assessment (EPA) – 3-Month Period:
Practical observation
Portfolio of evidence
Professional Discussions
Off-The-Job Training:
You’ll need to log evidence of learning activities that occur outside of your regular work environment but contribute to your apprenticeship. The required hours will be discussed during enrolment.

APPRENTICESHIP FAQ
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a work-based training program that combines practical on-the-job experience with academic learning. It allows individuals to gain industry-specific skills, earn a wage, and work towards a nationally recognized qualification.
What are the benefits to Learners?
Learners benefit from Apprenticeships by earning while they learn, gaining hands-on experience, and obtaining qualifications without incurring student debt. Apprenticeships also enhance employability by providing practical skills and direct workplace experience.
What are the benefits to Employers?
Employers benefit from Apprenticeships by cultivating a skilled and loyal workforce tailored to their business needs. Apprentices can be trained to meet specific job requirements, which can lead to increased productivity and a reduction in recruitment costs.
How are Apprenticeships funded?
Apprenticeships in the UK are funded through the Apprenticeship Levy and non-levy funding. The Levy is a tax on employers with a pay bill over £3 million, which they can reclaim to fund Apprenticeship training. Non-levy employers, those with a smaller pay bill, receive government funding to cover 95% of the training costs. The remaining 5% they must put themselves.
What careers can Apprenticeships result in?
Apprenticeships can lead to careers in various fields. Specifically, our company offers apprenticeships in Teaching, Marketing, Business, Sports Coaching, and Health & Fitness, preparing learners for successful careers in these dynamic industries.
