apprenticeships FAQ
What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a work-based training program that combines practical on-the-job experience with academic learning. It allows individuals to gain industry-specific skills, earn a wage, and work towards a nationally recognized qualification.
What are the benefits to Learners?
Learners benefit from Apprenticeships by earning while they learn, gaining hands-on experience, and obtaining qualifications without incurring student debt. Apprenticeships also enhance employability by providing practical skills and direct workplace experience.
What are the benefits to Employers?
Employers benefit from Apprenticeships by cultivating a skilled and loyal workforce tailored to their business needs. Apprentices can be trained to meet specific job requirements, which can lead to increased productivity and a reduction in recruitment costs.
How are Apprenticeships funded?
Apprenticeships in the UK are funded through the Apprenticeship Levy and non-levy funding. The Levy is a tax on employers with a pay bill over £3 million, which they can reclaim to fund Apprenticeship training. Non-levy employers, those with a smaller pay bill, receive government funding to cover 95% of the training costs. The remaining 5% they must put themselves.
